How to choose the perfect wedding flowers

In search of some wedding flowers? Flowers have been used to celebrate marriage since ancient times, as a symbol of luck but also for their visual aesthetic. Flowers create a romantic backdrop for your ceremony and reception venue, and can be tailored to suit any theme or style. From bridal bouquets to table centrepieces, if you are in search of a florist for your wedding, we’ll help you find the best wedding flowers on Bark.

Can I get non-floral bouquets?

Absolutely! While traditional wedding bouquets remain incredibly popular, it’s also possible to have one made that does not use flowers at all. For example, bouquets that are made from ribbons, buttons, jewellery and even paper. Non-floral wedding decorations can also include centrepieces and table decorations too. The advantage of having a non-floral wedding bouquet made is that unlike regular flowers, it can be kept forever as a memory of your special day. There are many companies who specialise in crafting decorative, non-floral pieces for weddings.

How do I check a wedding florist’s credentials?

Florists usually choose to work with plants because they are passionate about flowers, rather than having traditional qualifications. That being said, it is possible to find florists with diplomas or similar credentials. However, most florists start at a young age and work their way up to opening their own business where they will specialise in a particular type of flower arrangement.

When it comes to finding a skilled florist for your wedding, many providers will have portfolios of their work. This will give you an indication of the style of the florist as well as the quality of the flowers they use, the arrangement, use of colour etc.

What are the different types of wedding flowers?

Bouquets

A wedding bouquet is the most iconic accessory a bride can carry as she makes her way down the aisle. Wedding bouquets come in all shapes, sizes and even colours. When choosing bridal flowers it’s imperative to consider in your dress design, to ensure the bouquet matches the style. An experienced florist will be able to advise you on what flowers would work best, factoring in your preferences too.

Venue Decoration

Flowers are the perfect way to fill large open spaces at your ceremony and reception venues. From archways to centrepieces and even simple table flowers, there is not a more romantic decoration than flowers. It’s a good idea to choose your venues first so that your florist can advise you about the best way to fill the space, and what flowers will work with the design and size of the location. Your wedding venue flowers should also tie in well with your bouquet for continuity.

Floral Accessories

From flower crowns to corsages, there are many floral accessories that can add the perfect finishing touch to your wedding. Floral accessories can be worn by both the bridal and groom parties, making them very versatile. For bridesmaids, they can also provide an alternative to carrying a bouquet, such as opting for floral hoops or bracelets. Grooms typically wear a small buttonhole piece consisting of a single flower that ties in with the bridal bouquet.

How To Choose The Best Flowers For Your Wedding

Every wedding, budget and indeed couple are unique. So, when it comes to choosing your wedding flowers it’s a good idea to decide what would suit each of these factors. Things to look out for when choosing wedding flowers includes elements such as the colour, smell and longevity once picked. During your consultation, your florist will talk through all the possible options with you. However, there are a couple of points which may also have a bigger influence too.

Consider Your Wedding Venue

While in theory you can choose any flowers for your wedding, the location of your ceremony and reception will mean some varieties will work better than others. Venues such castles or stately homes that have high ceilings will need larger flowers to fill the space. So, think wide opulent blooms rather than small dainty varieties.

As well as the size of the space, the shape is also important. Large walls are perfect for floral backdrops, for example. You also need to factor in the time and cost of having elaborate flower arrangements being set up, as well as taken down again. This is especially the case for larger venues, which may require several pairs of hands to fill in time for the ceremony or reception.

In contrast, registry offices will usually let you bring your own decorations, but as there is a quick turnaround between ceremonies it’s not always possible to have elaborate flowers. You may also be having a traditional church ceremony, but want to pair back the floral arrangements. By discussing your venue with your florist, they will ensure the size and colours of your bouquet and floral displays are perfectly balanced.

I ordered 3 buttonholes and a bouquet for a wedding that was 8 weeks away, and not only was it all made in time, it was amazing quality, the flowers smelt amazing, everything matched and was better than what I’d envisioned. Each buttonhole was slightly unique, my groom’s had a slightly different flower as the centre to the other two, my dad’s was the same size, missing the main flower but tied in so perfectly, my sons was a smaller version of my dads and looked perfect on

Joanne was great to work with. We knew we wanted dried flowers for our wedding as it was in February and we were travelling up to Scotland but didn’t know much else when we got in touch with her. She was really friendly from her first message and came up with some ideas for us and colour suggestions that would go with our dresses and suits. It was great that I could also visit to see them whilst they were being made. Joanne chose the most beautiful colours. She has amazing attention to detail and made sure everything was just perfect before we took them home. The flowers were absolutely perfect for our elopement wedding. I am so glad we found you! Thank you so much. Louise and Rob
